Kintsugi

May 14, 2023 @ 3:00 PM

LOCATION: cSPACE King Edward (1721 29 Ave SW)

SERIES: Mainstage

FEATURING: Diana Cohen, Jesse Morrison, Josue Valdepenas, Roman Rabinovich

This program offers a diverse selection of music by lesser known composers, as well as an extraordinary young female composer from New Zealand. Our aim is to highlight some unique works between the 19th and 21st C and showcase the musical languages of these composers. The trio Kintsugi is, in a way, the centre piece of this program.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold and rather than hiding the damage, Kintsugi celebrates all the cracks or ‘scars’ for the unique history that they represent. This is a beautiful idea to have as inspiration for a work and it will be an interesting tie into having a program that explores everything tonal and atonal. Tonal works can generally be more easily digested and appreciated while atonal works can sometimes create discomfort and confusion. However, the aim is to combine a variety of musical styles, and encourage audiences to have open minds when listening to something wildly different.

PROGRAM

Kintsugi, Salina Fisher
Albumblätter, Op. 39, Hans Sitt
Partita for Violin and Piano, Lutoslawski
Piano Quartet, Josef Suk
