*In acknowledgment of the COVID-19 concerns, We have decided to cancel our “Great Quartets” concert(April 26th, 2020 | 3PM)
Featuring a superb quartet of CPO musicians, this program pairs two of the most dramatic and weighty quartets ever written. Bartok wrote his Second Quartet in the midst of World War I. The work has a sense both of concentration and dramatic drive throughout its three movements. The progression of the piece is that of a classical tragedy, Shakespearean in scope and weight, and drives towards a devastating end.
Beethoven himself regarded the C sharp minor Quartet as his greatest. Perhaps anticipating Mahler’s assertion that a symphony must contain ‘the whole world’, Beethoven seems to have designed Op. 131 to embrace a vast range of forms, textures and emotions.
